Went to Shintori for dinner one evening with Fionna. It was a long day at work, but it was a good day because I had received an unexpected complimentary email from a client, which I had been working hard at getting some recognition. Anyhow, the decision to eat at the place was very random. I had previously been in there once to have a look at the ambience but have never eaten there before.

We both had the Set Dinner (), but I had to have mind revised a little, as I did not eat cheese and I do not eat turtle. The food was good at CNY 220 pax. The service was also good. Sashimi was very fresh! The most exciting part of the entire dinner was that all the presentation of the food was in very exquisite manner.

At the entrance was 2 large vase fountains:

Went back to Prima Taste (dianping) for a second time while my mum was i town as we were in the vicinity again, after making a visi to the tailor at Lu Jia Bang, which was terrible at altering my mum’s pants. In the end, we went back a total of 3 times before the pants was finally altered successfully.

Now, back to Prima Taste … please do not order the Tao Suan. It is supposed to be a starchy dessert of green beans, but it turned out to watery and diluted. The garnishing (you tiao) was hardened and over fried and was such a bad dessert. Considering that Fionna only had that for dinner seemed like such a terrible pity.

Stiff, over fried you tiao

I personally had the Char Kuay Teow. The taste was rather authentic, but the noodles were not right. So, it was a half satisfying meal for myself. In fact, there was cockels missing from the dish which would have made a huge difference.

My mum had the Laksa, which is this bright red bowl of soup with coconut milk and spices. It was quite good, but it was missing some elements – Cockels.

Anyhow, I think only the chicken rice was the best dish from Prima Taste.

After a Saturdays work I was craving for a pizza treat at Casanova along Julu Rd (Hua Shan Rd).

Casanova is an italian tugged away in Jingan District. The ambience was great and the service was prompt. This was the third time back to the restaurant and we had tried both the pasta and the pizza. Although comparative to Penne Ivino, the food is not as great, the food was still good as a restaurant 10 mins walk from home.

Fionna & Mum enjoying a glass of wine

By using the Enjoy Shanghai card coupon, we had a free bottle of wine which was quite a decent house wine. No minimum spending, just show your card and the coupon and you get that free bottle of wine.

The meal was great and was only RMB 236 for 2 large sized pizza that made us really full.

This restaurant – Prima Taste (check out dianping) – was an off shoot from the familiar package brand that did laksa, chicken rice, fish bee hoon soup, etc that singaporeans all loved to eat.

Tucked away in the little corner of Megabite (大食代), this little restaurant served very good Singapore food. The chicken rice was good, their fried Kuay Yeow was quite authentic, although they do not use the right kind of noodles.

Amongst the 3 of us (my mum, fionna and I), we ordered Rojak, Satay Bee Hoon and 2 chicken rice …

Rojak (Fruit, vegatable salad)

The dish was authentic in taste and most of the ingredients was indeed present. A tad salty, though.

Satay Bee Hoon

The dish was good, but I found the satay sauce alittle diluted. There was also too much Tau Pok on the dish.

Chicken Rice

This dish was quite a steal at this place. It cost RMB 32 which is much less than what it cost at Rendezvous or at Orchard CRC. The rice was authentic and fragrant. The chilli was good and to top it off they game me a whole drumstick, including the thigh.

Dinner was good, after a tiring day at the tailor (Lu Jia Bang) where my mum was making her clothes (that is another event that needs a whole post of its own).

The place has been renovated since the last time I have been back. The food, however, remains as good as ever.

Frog Porridge (1st, the Frog)

We also ordered a dish of Prawn Paste Chicken Wings, which was very authentic and true to the taste of what I am used to in Singapore!

Went to eat at Sushi Inc last weekend. Sushi Inc is also otherwise known as Haiku by Hatsune. Sushi Inc has various branches in Shanghai, but we went to the one at Citibank Building, Pudong. The place, as expected of a financial district, was very empty on a Sunday night. The sushi was good in terms of the taste, and quality, but paled in the quality of the rice and the way the sushi was rolled.

We tried 3 different types of sushi – one with soft shell crab, one with white flower crab, and one with 3 types of fish. They drip a very delicious Teriyaki sauce over their sushi which gives the sushi a fragrance as well as a char-grilled flavour.

We had also tried the beef udon which was a good try. The beef was good and the soup was tasty.

One thing very interesting about the entire experience at the place was that the wasabe that was served was not “spicy” at all. It was a green paste that had no pungent smell usually associated with wasabe. On questioning the waitress, the answer was that all over Shanghai in all Japanese restaurants the wesabe was the same – not pungent. After which another waiter was smarter and came to answer our queries. He explained that wesabe had different variants and that there was one variant which was not spicy that they mix with the spicy version, as the local consumers are not used to eating something so spicy. The spicy variant now was in shortage and this is a phenomenon all over Shanghai and as such the wesabe that we eat was not spicy at all. It was a much better explanation, though we were still not entirely convinced that wesabe could be totally not spicy at all.

Overall, the meal was good with great tasting sushi and beef udon. It cost us RMB 305 for 3 pax which is a little on the pricy side.
