Understanding the customer vs Just doing a job

There is a remarkable difference between a salesperson that can connect with the customer and someone that is merely doing their job and pushing for a sale.

I had been looking for a Vitamin E cream/oil/lotion for my chicken pox marks, which have been a source of discomfort for me for the past week. I went to a couple of places, including Watsons but could not find a pure Vitamin E application. While I was a Guardian this evening, I was approached by what I though was a sales staff at the store. She asked if I was looking for anything, and I told her vitamin E. She said there isn’t but she could recommend some product that had Vitamin E and would work with healing the scars on the face. She thought she was relating to me by informing me that the cream would work to heal the scars all over the face, and mentioned how it can also heal very bad marks. =)

I took a look at her product. Quite anonymous, and had I still had no idea why it was good. It was like Body Shop or Loreal which sells by it’s name. This was some obscure product that she was pushing at me using very crude tactics. She tried her luck with a “tester” kit which was not quite the right price if it was really just a test. I told her I’ll ask the pharmacist for help. Disappointment!

The pharmacist advised I got help from the sales staff and I approached the REAL Guardian staff, which had no affinity promoting any product. I guess that helped. She brought me to this lady who was selling Vitamins for consumption. This was an example of understanding the customer. I said I wanted it for application. She said it’s a capsule of pure Vitamin E, so if you break it you can apply it on the areas required. While I was examining the product, she asked if it was for Chicken Pox. I said yes, was it so obvious. She informed that if I applied on the scarred areas, it would go away, and I could also take the capsules orally and it will also aid in the healing process. Now, this is what I truly mean by connecting with the customer.

She made the sale that evening. =)
