There are many websites that software as a service providing word processing, spreadsheet capabilities, CRM all over the internet. They do away with the computer and have the internet take center stage. For me, I feel that the computer is something very personal. Moreover, with more people having laptops, their computers become even more personal as they bring along their laptops with them on holidays, business trips, to bring their lifestyle with them, to bring their customized virtual world with them. What I see lacking is he capability for users to sync all their important information from their computer to the internet and have these information replicated at another computer. Not just replicating a webtop, but replicating the entire computing environment that a user is accustomed to.
It’s definitely a major feat with the networking capabilities of today and the amount of storage required is quite immense. Yet …
Consider:
You are at work on a Friday night. You have work unfinished. You sync your computer to the internet. (It should not take too long.) You return home and you sync your home PC with the internet and the office environment is replicated in your computer. It is midnight and you have not finished your work. You have a plane to catch as you are suppose to away on a short trip to a remote island in Philippines and you know that there will be no internet access over there. You grab your laptop and sync it with the net and you go on your trip. On your trip, you are still able to work on your all important document Fortunately, you had not decided to work your document on one of the many online editors, otherwise you would be unable to work on it on the island due to the lack of internet access. (Satellite phones are still too expensive) At the end of the trip, you had enough fun and was also able to complete your work. You return home and sync your work to the net. Monday comes and you return to office and with a quick sync, you get all your important documents ready for the early morning presentation.
The sync I refer to is akin to a handheld-PC sync where information is updated both ways to allow for full communication over all devices.
Anyhow, syncing of information is a tedious and huge task that no single company has been able to solve to date. It’s always a hassle to transfer information around and for the non-techies, it’s always too difficult and tedious.
